Waukee graduate Payton Minear was named the 2013 winner of the Iowa Golf Association’s Herman Sani Scholarship Award this week.
The four-year, $2,000-per-year scholarship will be presented at a special dinner during the annual Herman Sani Golf Tournament held at Echo Valley Country Club in Norwalk on Aug. 9.
Minear had an active high school career in golf and high school journalism. She helped Waukee win state tournaments each of the last two seasons. She was the 2012 individual champion in Class 4A and the state’s Class 4A golfer of the year, and finished 10th overall this spring after recovering from elbow surgery. She has also volunteered for numerous organizations, including The First Tee of Iowa and the Special Olympics.
She plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University to pursure a career in professional golf management.
Herman Sani Scholarships have been awarded by the Iowa Golf Association since 1958. Since then, 158 Iowa high school graduates have received scholarships. The award is named in honor of the longtime IGA volunteer who served as the association’s secretary until his death in 1957.
