Spencer Benton snagged the 220-pound individual title to lead Van Meter at the Perry Invitational on Jan. 18.
Benton, a senior who is ranked eighth in Class 2A, improved to 26-3 on the season with four more victories, all of which came via pin. He stuck Carter Havekost of Dowling and Brandon Denney of Carroll in the second period, took down Jacob Stueve of Logan-Magnolia in 1:00 in the semifinal, then pinned St. Ansgar’s Jacob Pierce in 3:29 in the first-place match.
Chase Wyant improved to 25-5 with a second-place finish at 138. He had three victories, including a pin and a major decision, before falling in the finale to Grant Sherman of Saydel, 11-6.
Luke Costlow (16-13) added a fourth-place finish at 120 and Bailey Tuma (19-8) was sixth at 106. Van Meter finished eigth in the 15-team meet with 81 1/2 points. Dowling Catholic (212 1/2), West Marshall (195) and Logan-Magnolia (185) finished in the top three.
The Bulldogs also dropped both ends of a double dual on Tuesday, losing to Southwest Valley of Corning, 42-27, and Mount Ayr, 60-18. Both Tuma and Benton had two-win evenings, and Benton had a 16-second pin of Southwest Valley’s Isaac Huber. Wyant added a 52-second pin.
