On Thursday, May 18, Marc and Misty Jo Ray were arrested regarding the death of sixteen-year-old Sabrina Ray. Ray was found deceased at her 1708 First Avenue residence on the evening of Friday, May 12 by the Perry Police Department. The residence doubles as Rays of Sunshine Daycare, run by Misty and Marc Ray.

Chief Eric Vaughn and Assistant Director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Mitchell Mortvedt led a press conference on Thursday regarding details of the incident, followed by the arrest of Parents Marc and Misty Ray.

Chief Vaughn revealed that sixteen-year-old Sabrina Ray was found weighing only 56 pounds. Sabrina’s autopsy was conducted on Monday, May 15 by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner. Results from the autopsy are not expected to be released for a few weeks due to further laboratory testing, but “severe malnutrition” was noted by the Medical Examiner.

“The autopsy results won’t be available for another probably four to six weeks,” Mortvedt said. “Right now as it stands, there’s probable cause for a judge to sign a warrant for the charges to support these charges. Once those autopsy reports are received back, it will be up to the Dallas County Attorney’s office to evaluate that to see if other additional charges are warranted.”

Both Marc, 40, and Misty Ray, 41, were arrested on Thursday, May 18, each facing charges that include the follows: one count of Child Endangerment resulting in death, a Class B Felony, four counts of Child Endangerment resulting in serious injury, a Class C Felony, and three counts of Neglect or Abandonment of a Dependent Person, a Class C Felony.

“Right now we’re not sure (if charges will change),” Vaughn said. “We’re continuing to investigate.”

According to Vaughn, an anonymous call was made to the police station, which resulted in the discovery of Sabrina Ray.

“We have been called to that house for other things, but not related to these three individuals,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn read during the press conference that “four of the charges that Marc and Misty each stand accused of are related to Sabrina’s death.”

Additionally, the four other charges they each face are related to the two minor, females who were removed from the house earlier this week.

“The two that we removed that day were adopted by Marc and Misty,” Vaughn said.

The two minor females, ages 10 and 12, were not currently enrolled at any Perry Schools, Vaughn mentioned.

Vaughn was not aware of how long the Rays have been foster parents.

Prior to Friday’s incident, the Ray couple had left a notice to families that they were leaving for a two-week annual family Disney vacation according to Kim Anderson, a parent of children who attend the Rays of Sunshine Daycare.

A tentative cash-only bond is set at $1 million pending initial court appearance.

This is an ongoing story and the The Perry Chief will update as more information is received.
