Friends of Logan Erickson of Dallas Center and Tori’s Angels Foundation will host a sports physicals, lunch, and silent auction benefit on Saturday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grimes Community Center, 410 Southeast Main Street in Grimes. Nurse practitioners from the Ankeny Walk-in Clinic will provide sports physicals for all ages for a free-will offering. The free-will offering lunch will include walking tacos, hot dogs, chips, bars, and lemonade. The silent auction will feature a variety of unique items and will end at 1:30 p.m.

Three-year-old Logan is the son of John and Sarah Erickson of Dallas Center. Logan was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with a Complete AV Canal Defect, a congenital heart defect. During his fourth open heart surgery, he suffered cardiac arrest and survived after 45 minutes of CPR. Unfortunately, the battery of the pacemaker that was inserted has begun to drain faster than expected and future options are being considered. Logan is in heart failure and has an unknown surgical future.

Tori’s Angels raises funds to help the families of their supported children who have life-threatening medical conditions. The foundation pays all medical expenses not covered by insurance from the date of sponsorship. This includes travel expenses to treatment (airfare, hotel, meals), as well as medical co-pays and deductibles. Tori’s Angels is named for all the generous community “angels” who supported its original sponsored child, Tori Heckman of Guthrie Center, when she urgently needed heart surgery in Boston in 2011. The foundation now supports 23 children in Central Iowa and has sponsored a total of 29 children. Board members and sponsors pay all operating and benefit expenses so that 100 percent of donations go directly to help their sponsored children.

Those unable to attend the benefit and who wish to donate to help Logan and other Tori’s Angels children are invited to send them to the foundation’s chairman, Bill Ridgley, at 4677 Panorama Drive, Panora, IA 50216. An online donation option is located on the Tori’s Angels Facebook page. Supporters can “Like” the Tori’s Angels Facebook page to receive regular updates on the children.
