Your library has lots of fun things to see and do during the last days of summer before the kids go back to school on Aug. 23.

Come to the library on Wednesday, Aug. 2 between 9 and 11 a.m. when you can Touch a Truck. We’ll have trucks, tractors, fire engines, squad cars and school buses on hand in the Adel City Hall parking lot for kids to explore. Thanks to the City of Adel, the Adel Fire Department, A-D-M Schools, the Dallas County Sherriff’s Office, as well as Jeff and Cynthia Eby for lending their time and equipment to this event. Ms. Paula also brings a lot of toys to ride and play on!

Our annual Lego Building Contest for all school-aged kids will be on Monday, Aug. 7 @ 10:30 a.m. Come and let your imagination run wild as you design and build great things. Awards will be given in many categories to celebrate your designs.

We are busily preparing for the annual Friends of the Library Foundation Book Sale. The pre-sale on Thursday, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. is free for Friends and just $5 for non-Friends. View the Total Solar Eclipse at the library on Monday, Aug. 21! We have 100 pairs of viewing glasses and we’ll be in the library parking lot from 11 a.m. to noon viewing the eclipse.

This September, Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation will have their second annual Anything Goes Basket Silent Auction. Starting the week of Labor Day, we will be collecting baskets at the library and the silent auction will then run Sept. 11 through Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. The money raised will be used to purchase a new booth and study table with a charging station for the second floor. Put your thinking caps on and surprise us with a basket that will be the hit of the silent auction! Please stop by the library to pick up the form that you will need to turn in when you bring in your basket.

The Dallas County Library Association will once again present a county-wide READ program with a twist this year. This year, two Dallas County Reads 1 Book programs are planned. Donald Harstad’s November Rain is the fiction selection. Mr. Harstad is an Iowa author and former police officer specializing in crime fiction and police procedurals. His novels are set in “Nation County,” a fictional rural county in Iowa, and include many of the same characters, primarily centering on police officer Carl Houseman. Mr. Harstad will be presenting an Author/Book Talk at the Granger Community Building on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. following by a book signing and good eats. His books will be available for sale at the event by Beaverdale Books. Dan Gable’s A Wrestling Life 2 is the nonfiction selection which will be read in October and each of the 12 Dallas County Libraries will have tickets available for the Author Meet and Greet at the Hotel Pattee on Oct. 19, 2017, 5:30- 6:30 p.m.
