A 2-year-old child was killed in a car accident on Interstate 80 near mile marker 99 in Dallas County on Monday afternoon, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Trooper Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol said that at about 4:15 p.m., a Peterbilt semi, hauling hogs and operated by William Kenneth Grother, age 28, of Parker, S.D., collided with a Chevrolet Impala, causing it to collide with a Ford van. The semi then flipped onto its side.

Dinkla said that before the crash, traffic was already moving slowly as the Interstate was down to one lane as another semi truck was being towed out of the ditch, due to an earlier, unrelated accident.

The driver of the Impala went to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Dinkla, but the passenger, Bethany Wheeler, age 34 of Minneapolis, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

The 2-year-old, whose name has not been released, was also in the Impala.

The occupants of the van and the semi driver were uninjured. A crash report from the Iowa State Patrol says that the semi was owned by Felsheim Trucking out of Parker, S.D.

The eastbound lanes were closed from the time of the accident at about 4:15 until the scene was cleared at about 10:30 p.m. Monday night.

Dinkla said that the accident remains under investigation.
