Joined by the Waukee Chamber of Commerce, Tingting Shao Beck’s new business, Sunflower Fine Art celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 10. The new business, which offers art classes to adults and children, is located in the strip mall at 268 West Hickman Road.
After teaching art classes at a Chinese language school for several years, Beck said that the idea for the business in Waukee has been in the works for several months.
“More and more, the parents want me to provide private, joint classes to their kids,” Beck said. “So that kind of gave me an idea, why not just have a business in Waukee?”
Beck said that Waukee is a good place for new businesses. She said that through her conversations with the Waukee Chamber, that there are currently nine elementary schools in the Waukee Community School District and that they want artists to stay in the district to help a younger generation of new artists.
She has a degree in art and said that she owned a business teaching art in China for 25 years. At the last Iowa State Fair, she took second place in the Fine Art Competition, with her drawing of “Tibetan Mona Lisa.”
“I am so lucky and glad to have that honor from the State of Iowa, so that gave me a big encouragement,” Beck said.
While many of her classes focus on drawing, which is her favorite form of art, she also does some painting and water color classes as well.
