In May, the Boone River Valley Festival celebrated the outdoors in Boone County with 16 events like geo-caching hikes at Ledges State Park, special story/craft times at Ericson Public Library, nature crafts at the Iowa Arboretum, a community-wide worship service, hand-crafted vendor show with live music at Arts in the Park, along with an outdoor concert featuring three live national country music artists.

The event was a success despite record high temperatures, drawing festival- goers from 4 states and all throughout Iowa. “Everyone who we spoke with that made it out thoroughly enjoyed all the events! We know we can’t control the weather and the hardy crowds that joined us throughout the weekend got to experience the best of Boone County.” said Jennifer Hanson, Festival Coordinator in a news release.

While the festival is produced by a volunteer-led group, the Boone Action Association, a 501c3 organization in itself, festival producers want to support the efforts of other county-wide nonprofits each year. In 2018 they successfully raised donations for the Boone County Family YMCA annual scholarship campaign. Thanks in part to a considerable donation from Boone County Fairgrounds and a $2,500 match from Modern Woodmen, along with direct donations from festival-goers, the festival generated over $7,000 to help Boone County residents afford the programs and services the Boone Y offers.

“We know the funds raised will make a notable impact in the health and wellness of our community of families,” says Boone YMCA Executive Director, Vicki Greco, in the release.

Additionally in 2018, a national website took notice of the outdoor adventures available in the Boone River Valley Festival. StepOutside.org recently named BRVF No. 9 in the Top 10 Best Outdoor Festivals in Iowa.

“What an amazing honor for year No. 2,” Hanson said. “We are thrilled to be on such a great list with festivals that draw in millions of people and are 30+ years in the making. We know there is so much to do in our area- we’re happy to shine a big spotlight on it for the rest of the state, and to the country!”

Plans for 2019 are underway with a many of what people enjoyed plus a few surprises to keep the crowds coming back.
