Iowa State Extension and Outreach in Dallas County will again be offering the Great Beginnings for Families and Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth ages 10-14.

Great Beginnings is a five-week skills-building program for parents of 0-5- year-old children. Come to learn about: Positive discipline, helping children cope with anger and conflict, encouraging learning through play, how children grow and develop, and building strong families.

We will be offering Great Beginnings in both the Perry and the Waukee communities. The Waukee session will be offered on Wednesday mornings starting April 10 and continuing through May 8 from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. It will be held at the Waukee Family YMCA, 210 N. Warrior Lane in Waukee. The cost is $5 and free child care will be provided for both members and non-members through the YMCA Childwatch program. The Perry session of Great Beginnings will be offered on Tuesday mornings starting April 23 and continuing through May 21 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. It will be held at the Perry Town Craft Center, 1122 Willis Avenue, Perry. The cost is $5 and free child care will be provided.

Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 is another seven-week class offered.

Parents will learn to use love and limits in guiding their youth, in family communication, and in problem-solving. Youth will learn how to set goals, understand & cope with stress, and practice skills to deal with peer pressure.

The Strengthening Families Program will be offered in Perry this spring. The first class will be on Monday April 8 and the program will continue through May 20 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. During week two of the program the class will be held on Wednesday April 17 instead of Monday April 15. Strengthening Families will be held at Perry Middle School, 1200 18th Street, Perry. The cost is $7/family. A light meal will be provided each week from 5:30 – 6 p.m. and free child care for younger children is provided as well.
