Polk County authorities this week were seeking to determine what caused the death of 71-year-old Ed "Eddie" Clark of Grimes, whose body was found in his submerged vehicle following a Sunday morning incident in Grimes.

Witnesses reported that Clark’s vehicle, traveling westbound on Highway 44 on the east side of Grimes, suddenly left the roadway and drove into the pond, which is located in the 800 block of Highway 44 just to the west of Grimes Tire and Auto Center.

The incident occurred at 5 a.m.

It was not immediately known whether or not Clark died in the incident, or suffered a medical condition before his Ford Explorer left the roadway and entered the pond.

Clark’s vehicle crossed the median and crossed the eastbound lanes of traffic before entering the pond.

The incident is being investigated by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisted at the scene by Grimes Fire Rescue, Johnston Fire Department, Metro STAR’s Dive Team, Central Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue (CIUSR), and G & S Service, which towed the vehicle from the water.
