Last week, more than 298,000 Iowans took part in the Healthiest State Initiative by walking 1 kilometer.

Event participation was slightly higher than the 2011 and 2012, but more work is encouraged by Ric Jurgens, chair of the Healthiest State Initiative board.

In a recent release, he stated the five priorities that need to be improved on to raise the state’s ranking include: Decreasing the number of Iowans who smoke, increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, increasing the number of Iowans who are learning/doing something interesting each day, increasing the number of Iowas who have visited the dentist, and increasing the number of Iowans who feel their boss treats them as a partner at work.
