Dallas County boasts a number of outdoor areas enjoyed by its residents and visitors, but only one of them offers overnight accommodations.

Sportsman Park, just northeast of Dawson, overlooks the North Raccoon River and offers visitors plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with fishing, camping, hiking and picnicking.

The park is filled with oak and hickory trees.

A new Sportsman’s Lodge shelter house is available for rent ($100) year around, as are two all-season cabins, each of which is designed to hold up to five guests.

The lodge is both heated and air conditioned and features thermo pane windows with screens. The facility also has built-in serving counters.

Each cabin has an ADA shower and rest room, microwave, refrigerator, heat and air conditioning.

The 40-acre park is also an excellent destination for those individuals who enjoy camping out. Both electrical (10 sites, $12) and non-electrical (eight sites, $8) sites are available for rent from May through October.

Four of the 10 sites may be reserved. Reservations must be made at least 14 days in advance of the visit.

A new shower house and modern rest room have been added recently, both open May through October.

There is also a Raccoon Lodge, which boasts a fireplace and is available to guests for $35 a day.

A handicap accessible playground is also on site and picnic tables are also located in the park for those who don’t wish to rent a shelter.

Camping, rest rooms and entry gate are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., May 1-October 31. Weather permitting, the entry gate is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 1-April 30 for day use activities only.

Camping is allowed in November and April as conditions allow.
