Hello from Van Meter!

We celebrated 110 years since "The Van Meter Visitor" had last been here in 1903.

We had a great time with a festival with a little music, food, drink, coloring pictures, Visitor posters and necklaces and last but not least the walk through Van Meter to the gravel road close to where the last sighting was. Chad Lewis, author led the walked and pointed out the various place the Visitor had been seen. Also earlier in the evening Noah Voss and Kevin Nelson, authors had talked with the crowd and answered questions. Thank you to everyone who turned out and keep this anniversary on your calendars to join us next year for the second Van Meter Visitor Festival. Also thank you to Fat Randi’s for creating a special drink "THE VISITOR".

This coming week at the library the kids will be learning and sharing more about Van Meter. Beside "The Visitor" we will talk about Joseph Van Meter, Bob Feller, the National Veteran’s cemetery and other items that make Van Meter an awesome community. I think we will be outside a lot too.

Last week the kids learned a lot about Banned Books. We were amazed to learn about some of them like Winnie the Pooh, Green Eggs and Ham, The Bible, Alice in Wonderland to name a few.

I also want to encourage you to get a library card if you have not done so. September is library card month and what an honor to have such a card that opens up your options at your library for free books, magazines, movies, puzzles, games and more. So stop in and if you are first grade or older you can get a library card. We will help you with this.

On Oct. 12 the Zombies are walking in Van Meter. If you want to take part in this call Michelle at the library at 996-2435. There will be a bake sale that same day. The Zombies are raising money for Bethel Missions, snacks for the after school kids and food for the food bank. There will be t-shirts available and Zombie books. So give Michelle a call.

Then on Oct. 25 Josh Heard, author will be talking with teens and adults about Ghost Hunting and the paranormal at the library at 7 p.m. Josh has written several books. His first was "When Ghost Hunting Goes Wrong". So be sure to come early and enjoy this opportunity.

The second Thursday in October is the crocheting and knitting group. All ages welcome at the library at 6:30 p.m. We will be making the coffee cup cozies for Christmas. Then the third Thursday is book club at 7 p.m. at the library. We will be discussing the book "These is My Words" by Nancy Turner. If you need a copy of the book we still have a few at the library.

We still have one spot open on our Trustee Board. If you are a Van Meter citizen and love the library just call Jolena at 996-2435 if this interests you. We have had quite a few new books, movies and magazines come in. We have the latest for Sue Grafton, Nicholas Spark, John Grisham, James Patterson, James Burke, Janet Evanovich, Stephen King and many more.

In movies "Iron Man III"," Star Trek into Darkness", "The Croods"," Monster University" and "The Blues Brothers".

This month I recommend the magazine "New Max".

This month in books we have brand new Guide Post series ready to read. These are very good mysteries and are strong on faith. They are similar to a cozy mystery.

Be sure to stop in for coffee or cocoa. Michelle and I enjoy seeing our community out and about. Let us know what you need and we will do our best to help.
