Republican David Young, of Van Meter, announced his candidacy this weekend to run for Senator Tom Harkin’s seat in United States Senate for 2014.
Young, who recently served as chief of staff to Senator Chuck Grassley, said in a press release that his experience as Grassley’s chief of staff sets him apart from the other candidates running for Senate.
"A lot of people who run for Senate say they’re going to do this, that or the other," Young said in a recent release. "It’s not as easy as you think, but I can hit the ground running right away."
Grassley also added, " He’s an outstanding staffer, just an outstanding individual of good moral character. After working for three different senators and working for me for seven years, I can say without a doubt that he would be qualified on day one to start out as a senator who knows exactly how to get things done."
Young grew up in Van Meter, graduated from Johnston High School and is a 1981 graduate of Drake University.
Currently, he is expected to face Matt Whitaker, former U.S. Attorney and the Iowa Republican Party’s 2002 nominee for state treasurer, and Democratic Congressman Bruce Braley in next June’s primary.
