Danny “Papa Bear” Coleman, 67, son of Plaze & Frieda (Holt) Coleman, was born March 11, 1949 in Hornersville, Mo. He passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016 at the VA Central Iowa Health Care Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
He graduated from High School in Bakersfield, Cal. He then went on to graduate from Welding school in California. He enlisted into the United States Army from Feb. of 1970 until his honorable discharge in March of 1972 where he served in the Vietnam War, earning two bronze stars. In 1985, he met his future wife Patsy Smouse in California. They lived there until moving to Panora in 1988. In 1990, they were married in Panora. They moved to Yale in 1995. Danny worked as a welder for the Wiese Industries out of Perry for 20 years, retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley motorcycle, mushroom hunting, camping, and dressing up as Santa Claus every year in Yale for the children.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Coleman of Yale; children, Connie (James) Daggett; Lorie Sheets; Jennifer (Karl) Andrews; and Nancy Harvey; grandchildren, Christina; Jamie; Teddy; Cassie; Ashley; Hayli; Christian; and Allie; great-grandchildren, Ava and Noah. Siblings, Marshall (Mary Katherine) Bassett; Lenny (Pam) Coleman; and Sharon Coleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Plaze Coleman & Frieda Bassett; step-father, Darrell Bassett; children, Scotty and Christy Coleman; sister, Brenda; brother, Kenny & Daisy Coleman.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 16, 2016 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. with family present at the funeral home.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family or at the funeral home.
