Donald William Heldenbrand, 86, of Boone County, Iowa passed away on April 26, 2017 from leukemia. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone, Iowa. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m., Monday, May 1, 2017 at Iles Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid, Iowa. Interment was held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter, Iowa.
Don was born in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 29, 1931. He graduated from Van Meter Community School then worked as a steel fabricator at PDM and farmed south of Van Meter. When he was 23 years old he joined the Army National Guard and obtained Rank CW3. Don continued to farm and work full time at Camp Dodge for 29 years then retired at age 52. After retirement, Don and his wife sold the farm and traveled the United States via RV. They spent their winters in Arizona and summers at Lake Ponderosa in Montezuma, Iowa. After several years of travel, they decided to move back to Iowa permanently in 2011 and have since resided in rural Boone County, Iowa.
Don was married to Jean in 1969 and they were married for 48 years. Jean died 5 months prior to Don.
Don is survived by siblings, Louie (Chari) Heldenbrand, Judy (Roger) Roland, and Jane Jones; sister-in-law, JoAnn Heldenbrand; children, Judy Ross, Sheila (Steve) Toth, Sandy (Gary) Dodson, Shirley (Bob) Carr, Nathan (Marla) Heldenbrand and Chuck (Dana) Heldenbrand; grandchildren, Monica (Caroline) McBride, Jessica (Wes) Reynolds, Nick (Wendy) Dodson, Hugh (Lela) Heldenbrand, Jason Dodson, Devon (Seth) Graydon and Savannah Heldenbrand; great-grandchildren, Zane and Blake Dodson and Harry and Edyth Heldenbrand. He is also survived by his special furry friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents, Bill and Ester; brother, Kenny; and sister, Joan Spencer.
Don and Jean enjoyed a grand life together and will be forever missed.
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
