Gwen Hornbaker-Cheney, 41, of Deep River, died on September 12, 2018, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center under Hospice Care.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Her family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Thompson Cemetery near Bonaparte.
Memorial contributions may be designated to her children, Deacon Bonar and Cadence Cheney Education Fund or METAvivor Research & Support Inc., an organization that she strongly supported after she courageously battled metastatic cancer.
Gwen was born on March 2, 1977, in Keosauqua, the daughter of Ken Hornbaker and Anna Thornburg Boecker. She was a 1995 graduate of Harmony High School in Farmington. She later attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
Gwen was united in marriage with Tim Cheney and they later divorced. She was employed with several car dealerships including, Thys Motor Company in Belle Plaine, where she was the parts and service director. During the annual tax season, she worked a second job at H & R Block in Grinnell.
She was a member of the V-Twin Vixens (VTV) Motorcycle Ladies Club and the Jewel Box Quilt Guild in Grinnell. She enjoyed riding her motorcycle “Sulu,” making quilts, riding and showing her horses, and hunting deer. She was a diehard Cyclone fan and loved dachshunds! Her pride and joy were her children, as she loved raising them and watching all their activities.
Gwen is survived by her significant other, Ryan Bonar of Fairfield; her children, Cadence “Cadie” Cheney and Deacon Bonar, of Deep River; her step-children, Nolan and Lauren Bonar of Fairfield; her mother, Anna Boecker of Toledo; her father, Ken (Robin Kovar) Hornbaker of Bonaparte; her sister, Nicki Hornbaker of Newton; her niece, Jasmine Bailey of Newton; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
