On July 9, 2014, Joann Groote Aukes, 84 of Waukee, Iowa went to be with her Savior in heaven. She passed on peacefully at her home in Waukee with her husband Virgil by her side.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, July 28, at Faith Lutheran Church in Adel with interment at 3:00 PM at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Cemetery northeast of Wellsburg, Iowa. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church. Joann was born on February 6, 1930 in the family home in Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Bill (Wm) and Jeanette (Dirks) Groote. She attended Grundy Center schools, graduating with the Grundy Center High School class of 1948. She attended the University of Northern Iowa. Joann was united in marriage to Virgil Aukes of Wellsburg on February 25, 1949. Together they welcomed two sons into their family. During the first few years of marriage Joann joined her husband on his mother’s farm north of Wellsburg. Later they farmed on their own near Morrison, Iowa. In 1951 her husband was drafted into the Navy for the Korean War. Joann joined him in California and Hawaii for most of his four years of active duty. In 1969 the family, moved to Texas making Dallas their home. Joann became a career educational administrator until her retirement in 1990.

Joann was an accomplished musician. The saxophone was her favorite instrument and she continued to play in bands until shortly before her death. The arrival of grandchildren brought a whole new interest into her life. She was so blessed by having them all brought up in the love of God by their loving parents, each one knowing Him early in their life.

Joann is survived by her husband Virgil; sons Dean (Michele) Aukes of Sherman, Texas and John (Tracy) Aukes of Adel, Iowa; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister Carol Akin of Grundy Center, Iowa. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Lavonne (Kempton) Walbaum of Marshalltown, Iowa; brother-in-law, Wayne (Carol) Aukes of Wellsburg, Iowa and brother-in-law, Dale Aukes of Bangor/Union, Iowa.
