The Van Meter boys basketball team will be playing AC/GC tonight at 7:30 p.m. This is the first time the Bulldogs have played the Chargers since Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center have consolidated. Although, the Bulldogs did play Guthrie Center last season.
When the Bulldogs and Tigers played one another last season, the Bulldogs brought home the win from both games.
Blake Fryar, is the leading scorer of the returners from last season. Fryar played all 24 of the Bulldogs' games and accumulated 209 points. Overall, he had 25 field goals, 42 three pointers and 33 free throws. Fryar also led in assists of the returners, with a total of 35.
Colton Sargent will be returning as a senior this season, last year he played for Adair-Casey (Bombers). Between both the Bombers and the Tigers, he was the leading scorer of the returners from last season. He had 293 points by the end of the Bombers' season. He averaged 13.3 points per game after scoring 119 field goals, two three pointers and 49 free throws.
Last season, Cadeyn Wardyn led the Tigers with 31 assists. Wardyn will be joining the Chargers this season as a junior.
For the Bulldogs, J.J. Durflinger led in steals. The returning junior finished the season with a total of 27 steals.
As for the Chargers, Avery Wheatley will be joining the team as a sophomore. As a Bomber and a freshman last year, he led the team with 22 steals.
The seniors led the Bulldogs in blocks last season with the highest total being nine. The first underclassmen that led the team were Grant Johnson Marshal Smith and Carter Coppinger, each had two.
Colton Sargent just as easily led the Bombers in blocks as he did points. He finished the season with 67 blocks. The Tigers leader of blocks was Collin Stowe with just 10 blocks.
Once again, Fryar led in total rebounds for the Bulldogs. He finished the season averaging two per game with 47 total.
Stowe will be the leading returner for the Chargers in rebounds. By the end of the Tigers' season, he had 84 rebounds from 37 offensive rebounds and 47 defensive rebounds. Stowe averaged 3.8 rebounds per game.
The Chargers have an 0-7 record so far this season while the Bulldogs have the exact opposite record (7-0). The two teams will play in Van Meter tonight at 7:30 p.m., after the girls' game.
