The Van Meter Bulldogs girls basketball team played the Panorama Panthers on Monday, Jan. 23, this game was a rescheduled game from Dec. 16. The Bulldogs had their first conference loss (59-51) after going into overtime with the Panthers.
The first quarter went back and forth for both teams. With only a minute left, the Bulldogs and Panthers were tied 12-12. It wasn't until the last 30 seconds of the quarter that the Bulldogs got the lead with a field goal that put them at 14-12.
The second quarter started with a field goal for the Bulldogs made by sophomore Emily Roberts. The Panthers came back with a field goal of their own from Morgan Johnk. The Panthers were still behind just two points.
When the Bulldogs had the ball again, Mackenzie Roberts shot a field goal and was fouled by Johnk in the meantime. Mackenzie was given a single free throw but wasn't able to make it.
The Bulldogs scored four more points before the Panthers could score again. The first field goal went to Chelsea Bright and the second field goal for the Bulldogs went to Mackenzie Roberts. After these two field goals, Panther Bailey Beckman stepped in and scored a three pointer. The score was now 22-17.
Within the next possession, the Panthers were able to gain the ball and Beckman scored another basket. The Panthers were now down just three points.
The Bulldogs tried to keep their lead, but they were only able to gain two points before two field goals went up for the Panthers. Devyn Kemble and Faith Powell made one basket each and the Panthers were down just one point (24-23).
Mackenzie Roberts ended the half with five points of her own to put the Bulldogs six points ahead. The scoreboard read 29-23.
The third quarter started off slow with a jump ball that led to the Bulldogs gaining the possession. Before either team to score, C.J. Jones had a foul called against her.
The quarter kept going and finally some points were put on the board allowing it to read 32-28 with the Bulldogs still in the lead.
Johnk made the next basket for the Panthers but not before being fouled by Ellie Folkerts. Folkerts foul gave Johnk a free throw that put the Panther within one point of the Bulldogs.
Jones widened this gap when she scored another four points for the Bulldogs. The 36-31 lead didn't last long as Panther Hope Wilderman shot a three pointer and a field goal. The score was now tied at 36-36.
Luckily for the Bulldogs Emily Roberts was able to score a three pointer at the end of the third quarter to put the Bulldogs up once again. The Bulldogs went into the final quarter 39-36.
Emily also started the final quarter with a three pointer, but once the the Bulldogs were on defense, Emily also had a foul called against her. She fouled Beckman who made both of her free throws. The score was now 42-38.
Emily Roberts fouled out in the fourth quarter but was still the Bulldogs second leading scorer of the game. She had 13 points that consisted of two field goals and three three pointers.
After few more possessions, the Bulldogs were playing defense and Beckman scored another three free throws for the Panthers. The Panthers were now up 45-44.
The Bulldogs managed to score four more points before the end of the quarter. With just ten seconds left in the game, it looked as though the Bulldogs would take the win, but Beckman threw up a three pointer when the buzzer sounded that tied up the score at 48-48. The game was now in overtime.
Panorama was able to gain the first possession of overtime at the tipoff, they also gained the first two points from a field goal made by Johnk.
Bulldog Bailey Junge had a foul on the Panthers next possession. She fouled Beckman who scored the two free throws she was given. The scoreboard now read 52-48 with the Panthers leading.
Another two points were scored by Wilderman for the Panthers to put them up six points. The Bulldogs just couldn't keep up as the clock kept ticking and only scored another three points.
The Panthers ended the game with an eight point lead (59-51). Both the Bulldogs and Panthers now have one conference loss.
The Bulldogs next game is tonight, Jan. 24 against West Central Valley at 6:00 p.m.
