In their last tournament before sectionals, Woodward-Granger Hawks' Tanner Vermaas, senior, and Cody Fisher end their regular season on top.

Hosted by AC/GC, the Saturday, Jan. 28 event saw the two grapplers dominate their weight class and take home first-place honors at this season's Charger Invitational.

At 42-2 this season the 182-pound Vermaas has been simply overpowering, and Saturday was no different.

He received a first round bye before earning a quarterfinals pinfall victory in just 78 seconds over Caden Larson of AHSTW.

Off to the semifinals where he and Riley Algreen of West Central Valley almost went the distance.

The match came to an end with 52 seconds left in the third when Vermaas finally pinned his opponent.

In his final championship bout of the regular season, Vermaas and Isaiah Yoder of Green County grappled for all three periods with the Hawk clipping the Ram in a 10 to seven decision win.

Teammate, Cody Fisher, freshman, followed suit. The 195-pound wrestler recorded 40 wins to just five losses, so he was familiar with fierce competition.

Just like Vermaas, Fisher received a first round bye before his quarterfinal victory over Ben Powers of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in an 11-0 major decision.

In his semifinals match, Fisher made quick work of Alex Hommer of Southeast Warren with a pinfall win in just a minute and 53 seconds.

He earned the championship when his adversary, Quinton Castell of Moravia, couldn't continue earning Fisher the medical forfeit.

Other notable Hawk wrestlers were Austin Scharlau (152) who finished fourth. Tyler Lawernson (220) and Aaron Sperling (170) both finished in fifth place.

Cole Carman (138), Gabile Yingst (145) and Cale Pritchett (160) each finished the afternoon in eighth.
