A close first quarter turned ugly in the second for the Woodward-Granger Hawks boys’ basketball against the host Earlham Cardinals.


On the road on Friday night the Hawks had the misfortune of watching a Cardinals team create various runs that ultimately won the host the West Central Conference match, 66-49.


Three Hawks players finished the contest in double digits. Spencer Hanson, senior, and Reese Jamison, freshman, each scored 12 points. Bryce Achenbach, freshman, added another 10. Hanson led the team with five boards.


After a close first that finished with the home team up just six points - 13-7 first quarter- the Hawks’ saw their deficit ballooned to 18 with a Cardinals 26-14 run.


In the third, the Hawks’ defensive struggles continued as they allowed the Cardinals 17 but managed only 11 points.


The road team was able to close the earlier 24 point lead to 17 points after scoring 17 but giving up 11 Cardinals points.


Collectively the Hawks’ unit shot 17-of-32 from the field including a 5-for-10 performance from three and 10-for-20 from the line.


They pulled down 16 rebounds - 12 defensive and four offensive, dished out 11 assists (Achenbach - six), 11 steals (Achenbach - four) and four blocks.
