The Van Meter Bulldogs took two wrestlers to the State Wrestling Tournament. Colby Wiederholt wrestled at 106 pounds and Caleb Button wrestled at 152 pounds.

Neither Bulldog placed at the tournament.

Wiederholt lost his first match against Grinell's Brock Beck by a 7-5 decision. He then was placed into the consolation bracket, which allowed him to wrestle a second time on the first day.

In the first consolation round, Widerholt wrestled Will Esmoil from West Liberty and lost by a 13-2 major decision. This second loss knocked his out of the tournament.

"I thought Colby and Caleb wrestled hard and gave max effort," said Coach Dustin Wright. "I don't think the atmosphere and the people had an impact in their performance at all. They were ready to compete."

Button also lost the first championship match. He took on Kade Kelso from Central Decatur and lost by a 17-0 technical fall.

Now in the consolation bracket, Button wrestled Cody Feldman from Beckman Catholic. Feldman pinned Button in just 1:52. Just li9ke Wiederholt, Button was now out of the tournament.

"These boys will be hungry and get here again next year," said Wright. "All this tells us is we need to continue to get better. Colby's two guys, Esmoil placed third and Beck placed sixth. Caleb's two guys place seventh and eighth"

Wiederholt finished the season with a 36-10 record and Button had a 34-13 season.

"Our team is going to continue to grow and get better. We are a young team, we will lose one senior, Colton Golwitzer, who wrestled 160 and was a district qualifier and finished 3rd at districts. They all have goals to make it to the State Tournament and they want to be on the stand. I'm very proud of the entire team this year. We did some great things as a team and also did some great things individually. As long as we don't get complacent we are going to be okay."
