The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Tigers boys’ soccer team is excited to get the 2017 season underway.

The Tigers have an exceptionally large team this season, 64 players to be exact. Those players will be split into three teams, though; freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.

The large team consists of 17 returning starters and letter winners, including three seniors that started regularly last season. The returning starters are seniors Drew Gordon, Matthew Dobrzynski and Mathew Oberreuter, juniors Davis Barton, Gage Fuller, Heriberto Ponce and Eli Schwarzkopf. Coach Bill Shields mentioned that Drew Gordon is the likely starting goalkeeper for the Tigers and looks set for a successful season.

The other ten are returning letter winners. These ten members include seniors Lucas O’Connor and Connor York, juniors Dakota Kahler, TJ Klocke and Ethan Mayer and sophomores Antonio Angel, Sam Bardwell, Davis Coppinger, Isaac Higgins and Owen Meier.

Shields mentioned that there are also a number of younger players who look as though they could have a big impact to the Tigers’ team.

Last year, A-D-M finished with a 5-2 record in the Raccoon River Conference to put them in third place and allowed them to be ranked tenth. The Tigers overall record was 17-5 on the season. The team also qualified for the State Tournament for the seventh time.

According to Shields, this year’s team is looking to surpass last year’s achievements.

“They do have an upbeat, fast-paced style of play and will definitely be entertaining to watch. Anyone who has not yet seen them play has been missing out on quite a treat.”

Shields says one of his team’s favorite conference opponents is their rival Perry. Last year, Perry was undefeated in RRC play and finished their season with a 15-4 record. He also said Winterset and Bondurant-Farrar will be strong competitors this season.

A-D-M has two new opponents on their schedule this year as well, Gilbert and Indianola.

The Tigers also have a brand new field at the stadium that they are extremely excited to test out.

The Tigers’ season unofficially begins on Tuesday, March 28 with a “customary” inter squad scrimmage. They will be traveling to play Norwalk who was the 2A State Champion.

The regular season doesn’t begin for the Tigers until April 3 with a game at Carroll.
