Spring means golf, and the season for the Van Meter Bulldogs is just getting started.

Jed Alexander is in his second year of coaching golf for the Bulldogs.

This year’s golf team is led by returners Blake Fryar, Anthony Lowman and Ryan Schmitt. Lowman averaged in the low 40s for nine holes last season, Fryar was mid 40s and Schmitt was upper 40s.

Alexander said whoever else will fill the three varsity spots is entirely up in the air.

“Without having a golf course within our community, it is really kind of up to each kid to try and improve in the summer at a course in the area. Some kids might be able to do that, but many do not, so we will just try to develop their skills in season again.”

According to Alexander, Panorama and Des Moines Christian are two of the Bulldogs favorite teams to play in their conference. The two teams seem to always be at the top of the West Central Activities Conference.

“If we can compete with either of those two on a given night we are doing very well,” said Alexander.

Coach Alexander mentioned that he is worried about the depth of his team this season, but he also said that he has faith in the three returners. He said that those three Bulldogs have good experience and should be solid leaders.

The Bulldogs’ main goal this season is to finish in the top four or five of their conference.

The Bulldogs’ first meet is on April 11 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.
