The Van Meter Bulldogs softball team played the Earlham Cardinals for the Class 2A Region 7 Quarterfinals on Wednesday, July 5. The Bulldogs took the close 7-6 victory.
The Cardinals led the entire game, with all six of their runs in by the fifth inning; three coming from the fourth inning alone.
The Bulldogs continued to fight and earned their first four runs in the sixth inning. In the final inning, the Bulldogs finally had the lead when they scored three more runs. The Cardinals couldn’t score any more in the bottom of the seventh and the game ended with the Bulldogs having a one-run lead.
Meagan Blomgren and Lilly Thompson were the leaders for the Bulldogs. They each scored two runs against the Cardinals. Meagan Blomgren also had two hits, a triple and one RBI. Thompson had one hit, a double and one RBI.
Haley Forret and Mackenzie Blomgren each had two hits and one double against the Cardinals during the game. Forret also had one RBI for the Bulldogs and score one run. Mackenzie Blomgren scored the final two runs for the Bulldogs as well.
Abby Archer and Molly Blomgren each had one of the Bulldogs’ nine hits. Molly Blomgren also had two of the five RBIs for the Bulldogs.
Forret pitched all seven innings against the Cardinals. She had four errors, nine hits, six runs and walked two batters for and ERA of 4.00. Forret finished the game with four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will be playing the Regional Semifinal game against Interstate 35 on Friday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. in Truro.
