The Van Meter Bulldogs baseball team started post season play with a game against the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter Spartans. The Bulldogs won the semifinal game 5-0 and will be moving on to the District Championship game.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the first inning when they scored the first run. They held the Spartans from scoring the entire game, while they had scored all five of their runs by the bottom of the fifth inning.

Junior Connor Guess was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs. Guess finished the game with two run and had one hit, a double and was walked to base twice.

Anthony Lowman and Mitch Pomeroy each finished the game with one hit against the Spartans and one RBI for the Bulldogs. Both juniors scored one run. JJ Durflinger was the fourth Bulldog to score against the Spartans, he scored the one run as well.

Carson Rhodes led the Bulldogs with two of the team’s five RBIs. Rhodes also had two hits, one of which was a double. Drew Gordon had the fifth RBI for the Bulldogs.

Brady O’Brien and Anthony Potthoff each had one hit against the Spartans to finish up the Bulldogs seven.

Lowman and Potthoff were the two pitchers of the game for the Bulldogs. In the four innings he pitched, Lowman gave up four hits, walked one batter and struck out six. Potthoff pitched three innings in which he walked two batters and had three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs will be playing in the Class 2A District 14 Championship game on Saturday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. at home against Roland-Story.
