On Tuesday, July 18 the Van Meter Bulldogs played the West Marshall Trojans for the Class 2A Substate 7 baseball game. The Bulldogs will be heading to the State Tournament after winning the game 8-0.
The game started out a bit slow, but in the third inning, the Bulldogs began putting runs up on the board. The Bulldogs racked up five runs in the third inning alone and finished their eight in the fourth inning when they scored another three. The game slowed down again as the Trojans were able to hold off the Bulldogs in the final three innings.
JJ Durflinger was the leader of the game for the Bulldogs. Not only had he scored two runs, he finished the game with three of the Bulldogs’ six hits and one RBI.
Connor Guess followed Durflinger with one hit, a double and was walked to base twice. Guess also scored two runs for the Bulldogs.
The third Bulldog to score two runs was Anthony Lowman. Lowman had one hit against the Trojans and was walked to base once.
Drew Gordon and Carson Rhodes finished up the eight runs for the Bulldogs with one each. Gordon also had one of the Bulldogs’ three RBIs and was walked twice, Rhodes was walked to base once by the Trojans. The third RBI and the sixth hit went to junior Sam Thompson.
Lowman pitched six of the seven innings for the Bulldogs. Lowman only gave up four hits and walked two batters, he also struck out six Trojans.
The Bulldogs will be playing in the Class 2A State Quarterfinals on Monday, July 24 at Principal Park. The time and opponent is yet to be decided.
