The Van Meter Bulldogs cross country teams began their season by travelling to Ames on Thursday, Aug. 24 for an invitational hosted by Gilbert.
Both teams had a rough start to the season with the girls placing eighth out of ten teams and the boys finishing tenth out of 13 teams.
The Bulldogs’ girls’ team had an average time of 26.29 minutes with a spread of 2.04 minutes.
Of the Bulldogs’ top seven runners, Lilly Thompson led the girls’ team with a time of 25:29 and placed 23rd overall. Following Thompson was Josie Cross, who placed 24th with her time of 25:30.
London Wille was placed third highest for the girls when she finished in 38th with her time of 26:30. Garrett Herr and Mattie Rebelsky were the next two for the Bulldogs. Herr placed 46th with a time of 27:26 and Rebelsky followed in 47th with her final time of 27:32.
Emily Roberts and Kelsey Roberts were the last two finishers for the Bulldogs’ girls’ team. Emily placed 52 when she ran a 28:12 and Kelsey placed 64 with a time of 30:28.
The Bulldogs’ boys’ team had an average time of 21:39 minutes at the invite with a spread of 2:44 minutes.
Sam Bass led the boys with a time of 20:26, which put him in 37th place. Carson Wille and Hunter Norris placed 43rd and 45th. Wille (43rd) ran a time of 20:42 and Norris (45th) had a final time of 21:02.
In 65th place was Tyler Coffie, he finished the meet with a time of 22:55. Right behind Coffie was Dylan Sloan, who placed 68th with his time of 23:10.
Zach Pleggenkuhle and Cole Rice were the final two runners for the Bulldogs. Pleggenkuhle had a final time of 23:17 and placed 70th, Rice placed 74th with his time of 24:21.
The Bulldogs will be running again on Tuesday, Aug. 29 in Dallas Center. The boys will run at 5 p.m. and the girls will begin at 5:30 p.m.
