WAUKEE — The Waukee Warriors battled through a defensive first half against Urbandale on Friday night in Waukee, but hit their stride en route to a 29-7 win over the J-Hawks in their first game of the 2017 Iowa High School Football season.
The Warriors (1-0) held just an 8-7 lead over the J-Hawks (0-1) at halftime, but scored three times in the second half, with their defense holding strong for the win.
In his first start for the varsity Warriors, sophomore quarterback Mitch Randall accounted for two of those three second half touchdowns for the Warriors.
With 5:32 second left in the third quarter, Randall ran the ball up the middle and pounded his way through the J-Hawk defenders for a 33-yard touchdown run, which put the Warriors up 15-7 after the successful extra point by Ben Lang. Just minutes later, Randall lit up the scoreboard again with a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Sam DeVries to put the Warriors up 22-7 after the successful extra point.
The Warriors rounded out the scoring with just over three minutes to play in the fourth quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run by Blake Espeland.
The Warriors hit the road in Week 2 as they will make the short trip to Valley Stadium in West Des Moines for a matchup against the Valley Tigers. The Tigers defeated Bettendorf on Friday by a score of 23-16.
The game between the Warriors and the Tigers on Sept. 1 will start at 7:30 p.m.
