On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs and Fillies hosted their first cross country invitational of the season. DC-G invited 11 teams to Dallas Center for the meet.

The Mustangs took first place with their average time of 17:42.3.

Of the 289 runners, the Mustangs had five of their runners in the top ten. Seniors Jacob Waymire and Alex Thompson took first and second. Waymire (first) finished the race with a time of 17:28.9 and Thompson (second) had a time of 17:33.9.

In fourth and fifth place were seniors Ean Followwill and Trenton Meggers. Followwill (fourth) ran a time of 17:40.6 and Meggers finished with a time of 17:44.9.

Brian Miner, also a senior, place seventh. Miner ran the race in 18:03.2.

Steve Borneman and Caleb Rhodes were the Mustangs final two of the Mustangs’ top seven finishers. Borneman placed 13th with a time of 18:17.9. Rhodes finished in 24th with his time of 18:43.4.

The Fillies also placed first out of the ten girls teams that ran at the invitational. They had an average time of 21:28.9.

Just as the Mustangs did, the Fillies had five runners in the top ten. Those five were Lexi Smith, Kaitlyn Murano, Emma Angus, Miranda Muhlstein and Natalie Paulson.

Smith, Murano, Angus and Muhlstein even placed back-to-back (third through sixth). Smith (third) finished the race with a time of 22:02.4, Murano (fourth) had a time of 21:19.3, Angus (fifth) ran a 21:23.5 and Muhlstein (sixth) finished with a time of 21:25.9.

Junior Natalie Paulson placed eighth overall with her time of 22:13.0.

Grace Robbins was the sixth Filly to cross the finish line. She ran a time of 22:34.8 for 12th place.

Sami Sterbenz was the seventh of the top seven Fillies, she placed 18th with her time of 23:13.4.

The Fillies have a meet in Winterset at the Lakeview Country Club on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. The Mustangs’ next meet is on Thursday, Sept. 7 in at Camp Dodge in Johnston at 5 p.m.
