The Van Meter Bulldogs (3-0) started out district play 1-0 after defeating the Ogden Bulldogs (1-2) 56-6 on Friday, Sept. 8.


Van Meter started the game quick by scoring their first touchdown with ten minutes still left in the first quarter. Quarterback Blake Fryar carried the ball 39 yards down the field into the end zone for their first six points. Sam Bardwell then kicked the PAT for VM. The extra point was good and VM now led 7-0.


Ogden was able to gain 18 yards on their next possession, but it didn’t compare to the 77 yards VM had when they had control of the ball.


In four minutes, VM was able to hold the ball for 12 plays gaining 77 yards on Ogden. Their possession ended in another touchdown when Fryar passed the ball 15 yards to Sam Thompson. With three and a half minutes left on the clock, Bardwell scored the extra point allowing VM to lead 14-0.


The quarter wasn’t over yet, and after allowing Ogden to hold possession for nearly a minute, VM took control. It took just 33 seconds to score another touchdown.


After a hand off, Carson Rhodes carried the ball 13 yards into the end zone. Bardwell’s extra point was good and the scoreboard read 21-0.


Just 1:40 left in the first quarter and Ogden had possession. Ogden’s Aaron McCutcheon carried the ball three yards before being tackled. On the next play, Sam Christensen passed the ball four yards down to Jonah Tews.


Christensen’s pass was intercepted by Thompson who then ran the ball 38 yards for another VM touchdown. With the PAT the quarter ended 28-0.


With 10:54 still left in second quarter, Rhodes was able to carry the ball 55 yards into the end zone, with the PAT, VM led by 33 points.


The clock ticked on the quarter with Ogden holding possession the majority of the time and gaining yards on VM.


It wasn’t until there was a minute left in the half that VM scored again. Fryar passed the ball 34 yards to JJ Durflinger, who scored the touchdown. After the extra point, VM led 42-0. The touchdown ended the half.


Van Meter gained 65 yards after just six plays in the first three minutes of the third quarter. The last 35 of those 65 yards were run by Ian Abrahamson.


After being handed off the ball, Abrahamson carried the ball into the end zone, starting the half with another six points for VM. Bardwell’s extra point put VM up 49-0.


Ogden was then able to control the ball for six minutes, gaining 51 yards on VM. Van Meter finally regained possession when Parker Fryar broke up a pass from Christensen to Tews.


With possession of the ball, VM ended the third quarter. Holding the ball for another three minutes in the fourth quarter, VM scored their final touchdown.


Anthony Potthoff, now playing as quarterback, carried the ball the last nine yards into the end zone. Bardwell finished it up with a PAT, putting the score at 56-0.


Van Meter was able to hold Ogden until there was just 1:43 left in the game. Christensen ended the game with a 55-yard pass to Tews who scored Ogden’s six points.


Niko Aradilla’s extra point was no good and the score remained 56-6.


With the victory, Van Meter will be going into week four with a 3-0 overall record. They will be playing South Hamilton at home at 7 p.m. of Friday, Sept. 15.
