The Van Meter Bulldogs played at the Madrid volleyball invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Bulldogs came home with a 4-1 record on the day and the Championship.
The Bulldogs’ first match was against West Marshall, in which they went 1-2. The Bulldogs won the first match set 24-22 but lost the next two, 21-16 and 15-9.
The Bulldogs fought back and won their next four matches of the tournament.
Their first victory of the tournament was against Ankeny Christian Academy. The Bulldogs went 2-0, winning the first set 21-13 and the second 21-16.
The Bulldogs went 2-0 on their match against Baxter too. The Bulldogs dominated the first set 21-8 and only allowed Baxter two more points on the second set (21-10).
The Bulldogs played Madrid in the semi-final round. Again, the Bulldogs won the match 2-0, taking the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-20.
In the final round, the Bulldogs met West Marshall again. This time, the Bulldogs took the victory in just two sets. The first set was a close one, with the Bulldogs taking the 26-24 win. The second set wasn’t as close, with the Bulldogs taking the victory at 25-20.
Sophie Volk and Maggi Braun led the Bulldogs at the invitational. Volk led the team in kills in each set. Braun led the team in assists and serves in all five sets. She also was a leader in blocks in three sets.
After the invitational, the Bulldogs are 16-4 on the season. The Bulldogs have another invitational Saturday, Oct. 7 at Martensdale-St. Mary’s at 10 a.m.
