The Van Meter Bulldogs took on West Central Activities Conference Rival the Woodward-Granger Hawks. The Bulldogs boosted their conference record to 6-1 when they won the match 3-1. The loss dropped the Hawks record to 5-2.
The first two sets of the game were close, but the Bulldogs took the win, winning both 25-21. When it looked like the Bulldogs had the chance to with the match in three sets, the Hawks came back strong winning the third set 25-13. The fourth set was extremely close and exciting having gone into extra points. After having to score five extra points, the Bulldogs finally won the fourth set 30-28.
Senior Aubrey Artzer led the Bulldogs in kills. She finished with 13 kills out of her 37 attack attempts and had six errors. Artzer’s kill efficiency on the night was 0.189.
Ashley Gales and Julie Pitman tied for leader of kills for the Hawks. Both seniors had 13 kills, two errors, 24 attempts and a kill efficiency of 0.458.
Maggi Braun finished the game with 46 of the Bulldogs’ 50 assists. Junior Haley Forett led the Bulldogs with 19 of the team’s 61 digs against the Hawks. Sophie Volk was the second leader of digs with a total of 13.
Sophomore Emma Drake had 34 assists for the Hawks, allowing her to lead the team. The leader of digs for the Hawks was Kaycee Major with a total of 24.
Artzer, Braun, Natalie Barth and Lindsey Golwitzer made up the Bulldogs’ seven blocks. Artzer, Barth and Braun each had two blocks. Artzer and Braun’s were both block assists and Barth had one solo and one assist. Golwitzer had one block assist to finish up the seven blocks.
The Hawks had just five blocks against the Bulldogs. Gales and Pitman led the team with two each and Drake finished up with one block. Gales had one solo and one block assist, Pitman had two solo blocks and Gales had a block assist.
Braun led the team in aces as well. She finished the match with three of the team’s ten. She also had 16 successful serves out of her total 17 for a serve efficiency of 0.941.
The leader of aces and serves for the Hawks was Ashlyn Soelberg. Soelberg finished the match with two of the Hawks’ five aces. She also had a serve efficiency of 0.923 after making 21 of her 22 serves over the net.
The Bulldogs play again tonight, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. against West Central Valley.
The Hawks will also play tonight. They will be taking on Ogden at 7 p.m.
