Two swimmers and two track athletes signed letters of intent Wednesday morning (Nov. 8) to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. All four have excelled in the classroom and in athletic competition having received All State and Academic All State recognition.

The Iowa Hawkeyes signed two of the state’s top 800 meter runners in Lily Campbell and Logan Akason. The two have helped lead Waukee to back-to-back State team championships in Girls Track.

Campbell, a 400 meter and 800 meter specialist is a ten-time State and ten-time Drake Relays medalist. She anchored the Warriors to a state title in the sprint medley relay last spring as the Warriors ran the 5th fastest time in state history. She also posted the 22nd fastest 800 meters (2:11.78) ever run in Iowa, with state runner-up finish.

Akason, one of the state leaders in the 1500 meters as well, has five Drake Relays and eight State medals to her credit. She led the Distance Medley Relay to a runner-up finish and teamed with Campbell on the State Championship 4x800 relay team last spring. She also placed 4th in the 1500 and 5th in the 800 at the State Meet and also placed 3rd in the 800 at the Drake Relays.

Alex Thorson will continue her swim career at Missouri State University. Thorson was the state runner-up in the 200 freestyle earning All State and All American consideration. She also placed 4th in the 100 freestyle and anchored the 200 and 400 freestyle relays to top-six finishes. The four-year All-Stater has 12 State Meet medals to her credit.

Kayla Rinderknecht signed with Minnesota State University. Rinderknecht is also a four-time All-State selection. She has medaled individually in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley and has been a member of Waukee relay teams that have placed in the top four at State all four years. She is a ten-time State medalist.

Thorson and Rinderknecht have led Waukee to 4th, 4th and 6th place team finishes the last three years. The top three finishes in school history.
