The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2017 All-State Football selections Tuesday morning (Nov. 21), naming honorary captains in all six classes. Selections were made by 105 Iowa Newspaper Association members.


Carson Rhodes of Van Meter was selected as the captain of Class 1A. Rhodes led the Bulldogs to a perfect (13-0) season and their first state title in school history. Rhodes rushed for 2148 yards, which led Class 1A, he also led with 24 touchdowns. He also had 16 receptions for 130 yards this season. Rhodes was one of the Bulldogs’ First Team All-State selections as well.


The Bulldogs had a total of seven All-State selections this season - including Rhodes. Defensive linebacker Sam Thompson was the Bulldogs’ second First Team All-State team member. On the Second Team was senior receiver JJ Durflinger.


The Bulldogs had four players on the Third All-State Team. Seniors Derek Golwitzer, Collin Godwin, Blake Fyrar and Connor Guess were the four selections for the Bulldogs.


Class 3A


In Class 3A, the Dallas County area also had seven All-State selections; six from Dallas Center-Grimes and one from Adel-DeSoto-Minburn.


Senior defensive players for DC-G, Jacob Protzman and Trent Carpenter were selected at First Team All-State members. Receiver Thomas Erickson was selected for the Class 3A Second Team.


On the Third Team, A-D-M saw their lone linebacker Nick Bradshaw. DC-G had three players on the Third Team, seniors Miciah Hidlebaugh and Tanner Epple and junior Coty Lemon.


Class 4A


Alone, the Waukee Warriors had six players chosen for All-State.


The three linemen selected for the Second All-State Team were seniors Kyle Sorensen, Jake Morrison and Nathan McDonald.


Receiver Sam DeVries was chosen as one of the Warriors three Third Team selections. Offensive lineman, Blake Sherman and offensive back Jordan Perry were also Third Team All-State selections for the Warriors.
