At the end of the wrestling regular season, only the eight elite teams in each class get the chance to advance to the State Dual Wrestling Tournament. This year, Waukee is one of those teams.
Waukee advanced to the State Dual Tournament as the No. 3 seed in Class 3A with a win over Norwalk at Waukee High School on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Waukee downed Norwalk by a dominant final score of 52-12.
The meet started at 195 pounds and it came down to the wire as Waukee’s Jared Johnson won a tie breaking over Norwalk’s Nate Hackart 3-2. That proved to be Norwalk’s closest chance to scoring points for quite some time as Waukee’s Nathan Nelson won a 13-0 major decision over Drake Leek at 220 pounds before four straight pins by Waukee.
Jake Morrison (285 pounds), Lucas Uliano (106), Nick Miller (113) and Kyle Biscoglia (120) were the Waukee wrestlers to record four straight pins before Cody Anderson recorded Waukee’s eighth straight win to start the meet at 126 pounds with an 11-3 major decision victory over Norwalk’s Landon Card.
Norwalk finally got on the board with two straight pins in the ninth and 10th matches of the meet. Norwalk’s Caden Schmidt pinned Waukee’s Marcus Schneider in the second period of the 132-pound match and Norwalk’s Carter Schmidt pinned Samuel Bloch from Waukee in the third period of the 138-pound match.
Waukee won the last four matches of the meet decisions by Brock Parker (145 pounds), Jack Smith (160), Anthony Zach (170) and Brandon Tessau (182) and a major decision by Mason Seifried at 152 pounds.
