The Woodward-Granger boys’ basketball team concluded its final regular season game with a lopsided 79-38 non-conference win versus the Collins-Maxwell Spartans (0-9).
At home the Hawks (12-9) recorded their biggest win this season, dominating the Feb. 9, matchup from start to finish.
A trio of W-G sophomores, Bryce Achenbach, Keith Braunschweig, and Pacey Moats, along with junior Noah Hoyt were responsible for 68 percent of the scoring at 54 points.
Achenbach led all players with 18 points, going 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-4 on 3-pointers. He also led the squad with 11 of the team’s 29 assists and had four steals and a block.
The Hawks gave the home crowd plenty of moments to celebrate beginning in the first quarter when they opened up the contest on a 21-10 run.
Their 11 point lead increased to 17 when they held the Spartans to single digits at seven while adding 13 before the half.
After the half the home team put the game out of reach when the offense exploded for 29 points and their defense gave up just 14.
The final quarter played out more like the second where the home team gave up another seven points but scored 16.
Braunschweig finished second on the team in scoring with 15, Hoyt recorded 10 with the rest of the starters combining for 10 points. Off the bench, Moats added 11 points.
The Hawks had one of their best shooting performances this season after finishing 60 percent from the floor including 40 percent from beyond the arc, and 55 percent from the line.
They pulled down 20 rebounds - 16 defensive, four offensive, with 16 steals (J.P. Nixon - 6) and six blocks (Brendan Bird -2).
“We really passed the ball well offensively,” head coach Brent Achenbach said. “Need to get after rebounds.”
With the regular season in the books the team’s new focus becomes their Feb. 12, Class 2A District 15 first round home game vs AC/GC Chargers.
“It should be a fun game, AC/GC is really playing well right now,” Achenbach said.
