The Van Meter boys’ basketball team saw its perfect regular season record vanish with a home loss against Des Moines Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The Bulldogs bounced back on Thursday, Feb. 8 and dominated the Woodward Academy Knights 66-36 on the road to finish off the regular season.


The Bulldogs (20-1) outplayed the Knights (14-7) in all four quarters of the Feb. 8 contest. The Bulldogs shot 52.3 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range while the Knights were held to 25.9 percent from the field at 11 percent from long range.


The dominant performance allowed 14 Bulldogs to get playing time against the Knights and four players to record double digit numbers in the scoring column.


VM junior Ryan Schmitt led the way with a double-double, shooting 5-of-9 from the field for 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He also recorded two assists and three blocks.


VM senior Blake Fryar recorded 13 points, senior Jack Trudo recorded 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block and junior Spencer Lamb scored 11 points to go along with two rebounds.


Ian Abrahamson, a VM sophomore recorded nine rebounds and led the Bulldogs with six assists.


Senior Bulldog, Grant Johnson only scored four points, but was big on the defensive end of the court. He pulled down six defensive rebounds and led the Bulldogs with six blocks.


Woodward Academy juniors Davis Qwame and Mike Barker tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece for the Knights. Barker pulled down seven rebounds and recorded three blocks while Qwame grabbed four rebounds.


The Bulldogs will play its first District Tournament game on Thursday on their home court, playing the winner of the game between Pleasantville and West Central Valley on Monday. The Thursday night game tips off at 8 p.m. in Van Meter.
