Dallas Center-Grimes sent three wrestlers to the State Tournament Thursday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Two of the three competitors made it to the podium at the end of the Tournament.
Zane Mulder (160 pounds) took third place, and Zach Needham (182 pounds) took fourth place while Jacob Comer (285 pounds) and Luke Fistler (152 pounds) were out of the Tournament on Day 1.
On Saturday, Mulder won in the consolation semifinals 7-1 over Dubuque Hempstead’s Alex Ward and recorded a second-period pin in the finals against Logan Neils of Ankeny Centennial.
Needham won a 5-4 decision over Ottumwa’s Joey Mitchell in the consolation semifinals on Saturday, but lost a 12-3 major decision against Glenwood’s Anthony Sherry.
On Day 1 Mulder was the only DC-G Mustang to win his first round matchup and continue into the quarterfinals. At 160 pounds, he won an 8-0 major decision over Jake Matthaidess of North Scott, Eldridge. Fistler and Comer both saw their tournament experience come to a close on Day 1, as the each lost their first-round matches and their matches in the consolation first round.
On Friday, the second day of the Tournament, Mulder lost in the quarterfinals, but picked up wins in the consolation second and third rounds at 160 pounds while Needham, who lost his first-round match on Day 1, won in the consolation second and third rounds.
