The Woodward-Granger Hawks sent a pair of wrestlers to the 2018 State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena from Feb. 15-17. Cody Fisher made it all the way to the State Championship match, but fell short of taking the top spot.
Fisher was pitted against Bryce Esmoli of West Liberty in the 195-pound finals. Esmoli came away with the win by fall in just 1:05 to claim the Championship over Fisher.
After the first day of the Tournament, both Woodward-Granger wrestlers secured a second day at State Wrestling, although one found himself on the consolation side of the bracket.
At 120 pounds, W-G senior Ryan Munoz lost 6-0 to Solon’s Zeb Gnida in the first round, but bounced back in the consolation first round against Talen Dengler of West Liberty, winning a 6-3 decision to move on to the consolation second round on Friday.
W-G sophomore Cody Fisher, who entered the tournament with a 52-2 record, pinned Shyler Langley of Bishop Heelan Catholic in the second period to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
On the second day of the Tournament, Fisher defeated Gilbert’s Reldon Miller by way of a 12-3 major decision in the quarterfinals before downing Hampton Dumont’s Dalton Chip 9-5 in the semifinals. Munoz wrapped up his Tournament run as well with a 12-3, major decision loss against La Porte City Union’s Jack Thomsen in the consolation second round.
