An early lead was all the Dallas Center-Grimes Fillies (14-8) needed Friday night to down the Lady Jays of Bondurant-Farrar (8-15) 51-30 in second round action of the girls high school basketball Regional tournament.
From the word go the Fillies were off to the races with a 14-2 first quarter lead and while it wasn’t the smoothest path to victory, Dallas Center-Grimes never relinquished the lead throughout the game, and a 21-16 first half lead blossomed into a big second stanza for the Fillies to seal the win. Even in cases where Bondurant-Farrar reduced the DC-G lead to three, worry never seemed to settle over the Fillies which senior leader Jenna Borchers expressed after the game.
“We’ve always had (a) really tough defense so I knew we could rely back on that if our shots weren’t falling so I wasn’t real worried because I trusted our defense,” Borchers said.
The senior leader was a hassle on defense herself while continuing to etch her name in the history books as her 15 total points put her at 1,156 points for her career so far. Borchers helped to seal the deal late going 6-of-6 from the free throw line, which was part of a solid night for DC-G at the charity stripe going 10-of-16 on the night.
Thirteen of Borchers’s 15 points came in what was a huge second half for the Fillies all together as DC-G tallied 30 second half points while playing stingy defense and allowing a mere 14 points from the Lady Jays.
The game as a whole showed off some versatility and adaptability by the Fillies especially in game tempo which head coach Adam Jones stated was a significant reason for the second half turn around.
“The second quarter we weren’t rebounding very well and the tempo kind of changed in their favor so we just needed to speed the game back up and get the tempo going the way that we wanted to and once we did that we kind of got back in control,” Jones said.
The depth of the Fillies was on full display after sophomore Elizabeth Elfvin led the way in points notching a team best 16 points while fellow sophomore Jordan Cunningham poured in 9 points to the winning cause.
Freshmen Avery Fried led the charge for the Lady Jays with 14 of Bondurant-Farrar’s 30 total points.
With the win the Fillies will leave the nest of Meadows Gym and will embark upon a trip to Boone for the class 4A Region 7 Championship game against the Toreadors of Boone. Tip off from Boone is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m.
