It was a rather windy afternoon but a solid start to the outdoor season for the Dallas Center-Grimes boys’ track and field team on Friday, March 30th.
The Mustangs were in the mix with 12 other teams all converging on Waukee Stadium for the Waukee Early Bird meet. That 12 team field included three of the top 15 Class 4A finishing teams and two of the top five finishing Class 3A teams at the state track meet last season.
Against that deep field, the Mustangs walked away with eight top five finishes.
Among the many notable finishes included Cade Bertrand who earned the highest placement of the day notching second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.59 seconds. Jacob Waymire put on a strong showing in the 1600 meter finals to snag third place with a time of 4:40.19. Sean Madsen earned a fourth place spot in the 100 meter dash after clocking in at 11.67 seconds.
In the field events, Damon Clapper elevated himself into the fourth place spot in the high jump with a mark of six feet, two inches. Jacob Comer made his way into a fifth place finish in the shot put event with a toss of 48 feet, eight inches.
The 440 shuttle hurdle relay highlighted the relay events for the Mustangs who ran their way into third place thanks to the group of Jeff Spaur, Jett Grove, Garrett Skalnik, and Damon Clapper. The group earned third place with a time of 59.39 seconds.
Next up for the Mustangs includes a short road drive to Adel Tuesday, April 3rd for the annual Hugh Norman Coed relays. The meet will be held at Tiger Stadium and will commence with field events at 4:30 pm.
