The Iowa High School championships continued on this weekend as high school boys tennis picked up with its singles and doubles championships.

Among the best of the best at Veteran’s Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids, the Waukee Warriors were represented by one singles entry and one doubles entry.

Noah Burmeister represented the Warriors in the singles championship for the second straight season and for the second straight time, the junior was matched up against a Goliath of an opponent in the opening round. Burmeister opened up the tournament against Dowling Catholic senior David Lu who had posted up a 14-2 match record during the regular season combined with a 29-6 set record.

Burmeister’s match occurred Friday, May 25 and although the junior put up a strong effort, he fell in three sets 5-7, 6-2, and 6-0. Burmeister finishes his junior singles campaign with a 7-6 match record.

On the doubles side of things, the dynamic pair of Will Ecklund and Nick Weyers made their way to the state tournament stage after an unblemished district rout. The freshman, senior duo opened up the doubles tournament against the Pleasant Valley pair of Nadeem and Wong and won in two straight sets. It was a back and fourth set one but Ecklund and Weyers prevailed with a 6-4 win. The second set for the pair was also victorious by a 7-5 final.

The fourth seeded pair would put on quite the battle with West Des Moines Valley’s pair of Habineza and Jensen going three sets. Weyers and Ecklund started off quickly with a 6-4 set one win but then fell late in sets two and three, falling 6-4.

Next up for Waukee tennis will be the team tennis tournament which will take place on Tuesday, May 29 in Ankeny. The team tournament will begin with team pictures at 8 a.m. with play beginning at 8:30 a.m.
