It took extra innings to decide the victor between Dallas Center-Grimes and Grinnell baseball Monday night but in the end, a tenth inning rally pushed the Mustangs to a 7-6 win.

It was a back and forth battle with four lead changes throughout the contest.

Grinnell opened up the scoring in the top of the first only to have the Mustangs answer with a three run third inning. The contest then progressed to a 5-2 DC-G advantage before Grinnell would tie the contest at 5-5 with a three run top of the seventh and with the Mustangs unable to push across the run in the bottom half, the game went into extra innings. Offense was light for two innings until Grinnell pushed across one run in the top of the tenth. Looking down the barrel of a loss, the Mustangs rallied back to plate two in the bottom half of the tenth to win in thrilling fashion.

Offense was not hard to come by as the Mustangs connected on 14 hits in the game which included a trio of doubles. Zack Beekmann led the hit category for the Mustangs with three hits in six trips to the plate with one double and one run driven in. Sophomore Logan Smith had quite the game as well going two-for-five with a double and four of the teams’ seven RBI’s. Smith would also start on the mound for DC-G and go six and a third innings of work giving up just three earned runs on seven hits. Smith walked just four batters while striking out six. Junior Garrett Anderson would get the win on the mound with two innings of work, three hits allowed and two strikeouts.

The Mustangs now improve their record to 2-5 with the win and will have a chance to earn two more on Wednesday, June 6. The Mustangs will then be heading to Indianola for a double header contest against the Indians. First pitch for game one is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
