Many high school baseball athletes dream of playing on a big time field but only a few are able to and often they have to wait at least four years to get the chance.
That was not the case Wednesday night as the Van Meter baseball team traveled to Iowa City where they played on the historic Duane Banks Field. During the college baseball season, Duane Banks Field is home to the Iowa Hawkeyes but Wednesday night, it was home to Van Meter’s match up against the top ranked Wilton squad.
It was a great stage to play on but not a great game overall for the Bulldogs who fell to the top ranked Beavers by a 10-0 final. It was a rare defeat for the Bulldogs who found themselves in a 3-0 hole after one inning. Wilton tacked on three more runs in the third, and two runs each in both the fourth and fifth innings. Wilton held the potent Bulldog line up to just one hit while striking out seven Bulldog batters.
The loss drops the Bulldog record to 9-2 on the season with both losses coming from one of the top two teams in Class 3A (Carlisle #2) and Class 2A (Wilton #1). The Bulldogs will be back in conference play tonight as they entertain West Central Valley in double header action. Game one will begin with first pitch at 5 p.m.
