T-minus one day away before the Dallas Center-Grimes volleyball team will kick off their 2018-19 season and already, excitement is mounting.
Late last week the IGHSAU released their top 15 rankings for each class and once again the Filly volleyball team has found themselves in the mix. After a more than solid 27-8 season last year, the Fillies charge into 2018-19 as the sixth ranked team in Class 4A according to the preseason polls.
That ranking comes despite losing a prominent player last year in All-Conference setter Ally Ferguson who put forth 670 assists with ranked first on the team and third across the entire conference last season.
“We’ve definitely got some big shoes to fill with the loss of Ally Ferguson,” said Filly head coach Cheryl Voelker. “She was a big part of our offense last season and it’ll be a challenge to fill that void.”
Even with that said, coach Voelker was pretty confident with her team with a certain aspect that DC-G volleyball hasn’t seen in awhile.
“One thing we have this year that we haven’t had much in the past is depth,” began Voelker. “With that depth it allows me to change up the offense a little and I’ll be able to mix up the line up if somebody is having an off day.”
The Fillies open up the season as one of three Little Hawkeye teams to be ranked inside the top 15 in their respective rankings. The other two teams includes last year’s Class 4A state tournament team Pella and Class 5A’s Indianola. As it was last season, 2018-19 will be another battle for the Fillies inside the conference, but a battle that coach Voelker is confident will go the Fillies way.
“The conference once again is really tough with the likes of Pella and Indianola,” began Voelker. “Regardless these girls on a senior laden roster, know how to battle against the top competition and what is needed to get the win. We have a lot of firepower on both sides of the ball to take a win in any match that we face this season, including conference matches.”
The first conference match of the season for the Fillies won’t arrive until Tuesday, August 28th against Newton. The first action of the season however takes place with the Filly Invitational tomorrow evening beginning at 4:30 p.m. DC-G will be welcoming in the likes of former conference foe ADM, Algona, Des Moines Roosevelt, Fort Dodge, Gilbert, Southeast Polk, and Urbandale.
