In what a home opener is for football, the Waukee boys golf team held their “home” opener Wednesday evening welcoming in a dual meet with Southeast Polk High School.

The Warriors were 2-0 heading into the meet and looking for win number three. Thanks to some improved play, the Warriors took home the win carding a team score of 157 compared to 182 for Southeast Polk.

A trio of seniors stepped up their game as Griffin Parker, Bennett Pedersen, and Michael Vicente claimed top individual honors for the meet. Parker fired a two-over par score of 38 through nine holes to solidify himself as the meet’s top individual golfer. Pedersen and Vicente both pitched in scores of three-over par 39 to tie for the runner-up medalist spot.

Junior Jack Utsler and sophomore Jack Starr both scrambled for scores of 41 to round out the team scoring for the Warriors.

After a not so wonderful outing previous to Wednesday’s meet, Warrior head coach John Kotz was pleased to see the improved play from his golfers, and continues to emphasize perfection.

“The players continued to work hard and the improvement showed,” said Kotz. “Our emphasis needs to continue to be perfect. We need to focus on hitting as many fairways and greens as we can.”

In an never ending journey to be better, coach Kotz talked about improvements still needing to be made coming out of the meet.

“We need to focus on realizing how the greens hold or don’t hold shots and plan accordingly on shot choice,”began Kotz. “The finer parts of scoring needs to be our focus. Our players want to be successful, they just need to focus their attention in the right places. Our putting can always get better and we need to continue to work hard on the short game.”

Regardless of the roller coaster ride so far, coach Kotz truly believes his team is heading in the right direction.

“September will determine this team’s identity,” started Kotz. “It’s trending in a positive direction after this meet.”

Waukee officially moves to 3-0 inside conference play after the meet and will get a chance to tack on one more to the win column come Tuesday, September 4. Waukee will be welcoming in the likes of West Des Moines Valley to Beaver Creek for a dual contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
