It’s always nerve racking when the season opener comes about in any sport, but the ADM boys and girls cross country teams seemed fairly poised in their respective season openers Saturday, September 1.
Both teams began the month of September in Urbandale where the Tiger girls were part of a five team field while the boys battled it out in a six team field. The girls hung tough and finished fifth overall with a total of 149 points while the Tiger boys hung tough against the likes of Class 4A’s Urbandale, Indianola, Lincoln, Hoover, and top ranked Dowling and placed fourth.
The Tiger boys picked up where they left off from last year among a talented field and put up 103 team points in that fourth place finish. The team averaged 18:56.7 and put two runners inside the top 25. Nate Mueller blazed the trail for the Tigers, placing sixth overall with a time of 17:06.6 and he was followed by Ethan Juergens, a fellow sophomore who placed 20th thanks to a time of 18:14.5. Quinten Kimrey put on quite a show as just a freshman, clocking in with a time of 19:07.2 to give him a 32nd place finish. Braeden Hegarty took home 46th place with a time of 19:57.2, followed by junior Max Fouts in 54th at 20:17.6, Caleb Crystal in 62nd with 20:41.5, and Cooper Greenslade in 66th with 20:47.4.
As for the Lady Tigers, their fifth place finish included 149 points and a team time of 24:40.06. Sophomore Hannah Welch paced ADM with a time of 23:02.8 to place 39th overall. Fellow sophomore Zoe Marckmann also punched in a good start with 23:45.0 to place 49th followed by Brynn Busta in 64th thanks to a time of 24:57.4. Emily Hlas and Astraea Munyan fought their way for 74th and 77th places with times of 25:41.8 and 25:55.6 respectively. The final two of the top seven for the ADM girls was Mikayla Klein with a time of 27:12.6 to place 91st while Kristen Baier started off her senior season with a time of 27:39.6.
