In a hard fought battle between conference foe, the Van Meter volleyball team couldn’t hold on to the victory as they fell late Tuesday night to Earlham by the final of three sets to two.
The loss gives the Bulldogs an overall mark of 3-5. The loss also sets Van Meter back in conference play as two straight conference losses in a row have left the Bulldogs with a 1-3 mark inside West Central Activities Conference play. The last time the Bulldog volleyball team suffered back to back conference set backs was the 2014-15 campaign.
The match started off in favor of the home town Earlham team who jumped out to a quick two sets to none lead. Set one started and ended in favor of the Cardinals who won the opening set 25-15. Earlham then held off a strong comeback attempt by Van Meter to secure a 25-20 set two victory.
From there the Bulldogs held strong and flipped the tables, storming back to claim a set three victory by a 25-18 final. The Bulldogs then followed that up with a close and hard fought set four, winning 25-22. Unfortunately, as the fifth and final set headed twoards the ladder end, Van Meter just couldn’t catch up and fell to Earlham in the final stanza 15-9.
The win unfortunately drops the Bulldogs to a record of 3-5 to start the season. They will have the chance to get right back in the swing of things as they welcome in a very familiar opponent for their next match up on Tuesday, September 11. They will be welcoming in the likes of conference foe Ogden, a team the Bulldogs have swept in five straight match ups dating back to the 2014 season. Since then, Van Meter has outscored Ogden 14 sets to none.
